JGRLS is pleased to announce the addition of eBooks to the many services we provide to our patrons! This is a new and exciting adventure for all involved and here are some things that may be helpful as you navigate through The Magic Wall, Blio and the JGRLS Online Catalog also known as our PAC.
Our new eBook provider is a service called Axis 360. The eBooks we purchase are accessed via The Magic Wall which has a link on the JGRLS website. The eBooks can be downloaded onto devices using an application called Blio Reader. Blio uses “Cloud Storage” so eBooks can be accessed on multiple devices once it is checked out, more on that in a bit.
Yes, this is a lot of information and there are many questions about Apps, Devices, eBook Formats and ways to download them. Let’s break all this down into a few easy to navigate components that will hopefully answer as many questions as possible:
The official JGRLS web page for getting started (our recommended starting point) has easy to follow directions for setting up your devices and accounts, and can be found at our Axis 360 homepage.
Next, some detailed information that may answer some questions about how and why this works:
First, you need the application, aka App, called the Blio Reader in order to download and read eBooks on your devices. In order to use this service your device has to be able to download the Blio App, or to put it more simply it must be an Internet Based Device such as a computer, many (but not all) smart phones and Android devices, iPad, iPhone, etc. If your device isn’t able to surf the Internet using a Web Browser or download Apps it probably won’t be able to download the Blio Reader. And sadly yes, because of this not all devices will support Blio.
Second, if you haven’t already created an account, go to the Axis 360 homepage page on our website and follow the instructions for setting up an account that will be linked to your existing valid JGRLS library card ID and personal identification number (PIN).
When you check out an eBook from the Magic Wall it is deposited in your Blio account in the Cloud. This makes it accessible through the internet using any device that has the Blio Reader installed on it. This means you can read the same book on multiple devices! When the device syncs with your Blio account the eBook is downloaded to that device and can be opened and viewed even if you are off-line.
Conventional eReader devices that do not have Web Browsers, such as some provided by Kindle and Nook, connect only with their parent company for service. *Note that an eReader is a device with a specific purpose, downloading and reading eBooks, often from a single target source.
Enter the World of “Side-Loading”
There are several devices that need a second application that will load an eBook that is in a Format called ePub. The Nook, Sony Reader and Kobo Family of Devices for example, need to use Adobe Digital Editions to side-load the file from a computer. This simply put is downloading an eBook to your computer and loading it onto a device via a USB cable. The directions for setting up a free Adobe account, installing the A.D.E. to your computer and downloading ePub formatted titles from the Magic Wall to your device are on the Axis 360 homepage.
An alternate format that can be side-loaded is PDF. Some titles available from the Magic Wall are already available in all three formats and if your device needs to side-load materials it will be able to load PDF format. It is helpful to become familiar with multiple formats for your devices, for example if you go to Project Gutenberg where you have access to thousands of free eBook titles!
Searching the Online Catalog and Checking out an eBook!
To search for titles in the Online Catalog/PAC you can look up an author or title just as before, and all the available formats will be displayed:
When you have the item pulled up in the eBook format there will be a link on the page that will take you to the login for the Magic Wall where you will be able to check out or place a hold request for the eBook.
Browsing can be done by typing axis 360 into the search box. It pulls up all the titles using their eBook format. Once there it is quick and easy to use the filters to narrow down your search. (For example: by author, genre, new releases, etc.)
The Checkout List and How it Works
When checking out or placing an item on hold we recommend placing it in your cart and then proceeding to “My Checkout List” to verify Format and length of checkout time. Using the quick “Checkout Now” feature doesn’t provide the level of accuracy for item format and checkout length provided by placing items in your cart.
